  • Since the couple belong to different religions (Saif Ali Khan is a Muslim and Kareena Kapoor is a Punjabi – Sindhi Hindu and a practicing Christian), they need to get married under the Indian Special Marriage Act, 1954”.
  • Around noon on 16 October, 2012, the Bandra Family Court Marriage Registrar, Surekha Lokhare, arrived at Fortune Heights at 29th Hill Road, Bandra (where Saif and Kareena live), to register the marriage of Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan. Sharmila Tagore, Randhir Kapoor and Babita Kapoor were the official witnesses for the civil wedding. With the signing of the marriage register, Saif and Kareena legally became Husband and Wife. A religious marriage ceremony need not be conducted for Kareena and Saif to be married.
  • Saif’s name on the Marriage Certificate is Sajid Ali Khan, which is his real name.

  • As per the provisions of the “Indian Special Marriage Act, 1954”, Saif and Kareena had to give formal notice of their intention to wed to the Bandra Marriage Registrar’s Office 30 days before the wedding. Saif Ali Khan had informed the Marriage Registrar about his upcoming wedding on 12 September, 2012. The Bandra Marriage Officer made an entry in the Marriage Notice Book and put up a notice in the office. The reason behind this 30 day notice period is to allow anyone to raise an objection to Saif and Karina’s wedding.
  • As per the “Indian Special Marriage Act, 1954”, a religious wedding ceremony is not required for a couple to be married. As per this Indian law, the registration of the marriage means that the wedding is legally solemnized. This act is unlike the 4 other Indian Religious Marriage laws (“Hindu Marriage Act”, “Muslim Marriage Act”, “Indian Christian Marriage Act” and “Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act”), where the couple have to first conduct a religious wedding ritual and only then register their marriage.
  • Post marriage, Kareena will take the name Kareena Kapoor Khan.

  • Saif’s father, “Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi” passed away on 22 September, 2011. The Kapoor and Pataudi families have waited for the traditional one year mourning period to be over before Saif and Karina are married.
  • After their registered civil marriage, Saif Ali Khan Pataudi and Kareena Kapoor once again exchanged marriage vows in a religious ceremony. The “Nikaah” ceremony took place on the evening of 16 October at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in South Mumbai. Those present suggested that it was less of a conventional “Nikaah” ceremony and more of a reaffirmation of wedding vows between Kareena and Saif Khan.
  • Kareena Kapoor wore a lovely “Gharara”, which is a Pataudi family heirloom worn previously by Saif’s grandmother Begum Sajida Sultan in 1939 and her mother-in-law, Sharmila Tagore, at her wedding with Saif’s father Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi in 1969. Kareena’s heavy wedding “Sharara” or “Gharara” (wedding bridal dress) is in gold, rust and blue and it was restored by Ritu Kumar. Soon after the ceremony, Kareena changed into an exquisite burgundy “Lehenga Choli” with intricate silver zari  work. Kareena Kapoor’s bridal trousseau was designed by Indian designer and stylist Manish Malhotra.
  • Saif’s wedding outfit was a traditional and simple golden “Achkan” and Turban designed by Raghuvendra Rathod. For more details, please refer to section on “Saif Ali Khan and Kareena’s Wedding Clothes”.
  • Talking to the press, Kareena’s father asserted that there was no religious conversion by either Saif or Kareena. Each would respect the others faith.

  • As per the wishes of Kareena and Saif, only close family members and friends attended the wedding at the Taj. By Bollywood standards, this was a rather small wedding/reception. The Reception in Delhi on 18 October was at a grander scale with over 600 people attending.
  • Practically the entire Kapoor clan was present from Kareena Kapoor’s parents Randhir, Babita, sister Karishma Kapur, Kareena’s uncles (Rishi Kapoor with wife Neetu Singh, Rajiv Kapoor), Kareena’s aunts (Ritu Nanda, Reema Jain), Kareena’s grandmother Krishna Kapoor, Kareena’s granduncle Shashi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor’s cousins (Kunal Kapoor, Aditya Raj Kapoor), Kareena’s cousins (Nitasha Nanda, Nikhil Nanda with wife Shweta Bachchan Nanda, Ranbir Kapoor, Armaan Jain), Kareena’s niece (Samaira Kapoor) and nephew (Kiaan Raj Kapoor).

  • A surprising absence was Mr Amitabh Bachchan who is related to Kareena Kapoor. Amitabh Bachchan’s daughter Shweta Bachchan Nanda is married to Kareena’s cousin Nikhil Nanda. Mr Bachchan was busy filming “Kaun Banega Crorepati” (KBC, India’s equivalent of “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?”). Shahrukh Khan arrived late at Kareena and Saif’s “Nikaah”, because he was filming an episode of KBC with Mr Bachchan. Mr Amitabh Bachchan was represented by daughter Shweta Bachchan Nanda, son-in-law, Nitasha Nanda, and grandson Agastye.

  • For the religious wedding or “Nikah” on 16 October, 2012, Kareena Kapoor wore mother-in-law, Sharmila Tagore’s, bridal dress, a “Gharara” in gold, green and rust (please see the above image). A “Gharara” is usually worn by Muslim women in North India and it consists of a “Kurti” (waist length tunic), “Farsi Pajama” (long wide legged pants or skirts that flare at the legs) and a “Dupatta“. This Pataudi bridal trousseau originally belonged to Begum Sajida Sultan, the “Begum of Bhopal”, Sharmila Tagore’s mother-in-law and Saif’s grandmother. Raghuvendra Rathore also designed a “Bandhgala” (close neck) suit for Saif. Incidentally Raghuvendra Rathore is also designed a “Bandgala” for Lisa Ray’s husband, Jason Dehni, for Lisa Ray’s Wedding on 20 October.
  • Raghuvendra Rathod had previously designed Saif’s royal wardrobe for the movie “Eklavya”.

Saif and Kareena Follow Different Religion. Will Kareena convert to Islam

  • Kareena Kapoor’s father, Randhir Kapoor, is a Punjabi and her mother, Babita Shivdasani, is a Sindhi. Saif Ali Khan and his family are followers of Islam. Saif Ali Khan’s mother, Sharmila Tagore – the grand niece of Rabindranath Tagore, converted to Islam at the time of her marriage to Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. After the passing of his father, Saif Ali Khan has been conferred the title of the 10th Nawab of Pataudi. Although this is a ceremonial title, it entails certain social and religious responsibilities.
  • Saif has made it clear that he does not expect Kareena Kapoor to convert to Islam and become a Muslim. Saif, Kareena’s father, Randhir Kapoor and Kareena’s mother-in-law, Sharmila Tagore, have all asserted that Kareena can and should follow the religion of her choice.
  • When Saif had married Amrita Singh in 1994, Amrita had converted to Islam. According to Saif, there had been no pressure on Amrita to convert to Islam. Amrita was free to practice her religious beliefs. Amrita Singh was  half Muslim to begin with. Amrita Singh’s father, Shivinder Singh, was a Sikh army officer and her mother, Ruksana Sultana, was a Muslim. Saif and Amrita had a Nikaah ceremony.
  • It will be interesting to see what role, if any, religion plays in the Kareena Kapoor – Saif Ali Khan marriage. Many young inter-religion couples may follow their example in their personal life. Kareena and Saif can be positive role models for young couples in a similar situation.

Saif Ali Khan’s Marriage To Amrita Singh

Saif Khan was married to actress Amrita Singh from October 1991 to 2004. Saif has a daughter, Sara Ali Khan, and son, Ibrahim Ali Khan, from his marriage to Amrita Singh.

Saif Ali Khan’s Connection with Pataudi and Bhopal

Saif’s father Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi was the 9th Nawab of Pataudi. After his death, the title of “Nawab of Pataudi” was conferred on Saif Ali Khan. Although in today’s India, this title is ceremonial, it does indicate the Saif’s royal background. Saif Ali Khan’s mother, actress Sharmila Tagore is the great grand niece of Rabindranath Tagore.

In addition to property in Pataudi in Punjab, Saif and his family also have ancestral property in Bhopal. Saif Ali Khan’s grandmother, “Sajida Sultan“, was the “Begum of Bhopal”. Saif’s great grandfather, Nawab Hamidullah Khan, was the last ruling Nawab of Bhopal. Saif Ali Khan’s family owns large tracts of property in Bhopal. The Pataudi’s have been patrons of “Auqaf-e-Shahi” (or “Aukaf-e-Shahi”), which is the charitable trust that manages the princely “waqf” (Islamic charitable trust) properties (mosques, shrines, orphanages) in Bhopal. It is estimated that the value of the “wakf” properties is in excess of Rs 300 crore (Rs 3 Billion). Saif’s father, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi was the “Mutawalli” (chief patron) of the “Auqaf-e-Shahi”. In 2008 Pataudi Sr recommended that his eldest daughter, Saba Ali Khan, be made the “Asnaib Muttawalli” (deputy patron) of the trust. After Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi’s death in September, 2011, Saba Ali Khan was appointed the “Mutawalli” (Patron) of the “Aukaf-e-Shahi” Waqf Trust.

In 2003, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi had donated land overlooking Bhopal’s famous “Bada Talab” (Big Lake) to build a mosque in the name of his mother, “Sajida Sultan”.
