There is expected to be a drop in the number of marriages in China in 2013 “Gui-Si“ because last year (2012) was the Year of the Dragon, considered one of the most auspicious years as per Chinese Zodiac astrology and 2013 year is a “Widow Year” (no “Li Chun”) which is not considered lucky for marriage.

What is “Li Chun” or “Widow Year”?

As per the Chinese SOLAR Calendar, the first day of the year is called “Li Chun” and it always falls on the 4 February. As per the Chinese LUNAR Calendar, the first day of 2013 or the “Yin Water Snake” is 10 February, 2013. Since in 2013, the first day of the Chinese Lunar Calendar (10 Feb, 2013) is after “Lichun” (4 February, 2013), 2013 does not have a “Li Chun”. When there is no “Li Chun” in a lunar year, it is known as a “Widow Year”. According to Chinese legend, when a couple marry in a “Widow Year”, there is a higher probability of the husband dying first and leaving his wife a widow.
