Notes On Arriving at Auspicious Indian Hindu Marriage Date
- Please note the above auspicious Hindu marriage dates (“Shubh Vivah Muhurat” or “Shubh Lagaan Muhurat”) are indicative dates. PLEASE CONSULT YOUR ASTROLOGER TO ARRIVE AT THE BEST DATE AND TIME FOR MARRIAGE.
- The most important factor in deciding the best marriage date and time for Hindu weddings is the “Kundali” (Hindu Vedic Horoscope) of the bride and groom, “Janam Patri” (Birth Charts) of the couple, Location of the marriage and Hindu Panchangam (Hindu astrological calendar).
- Hindu calendar is called the “Panchang”. The Panchang calendar is also known as Panchangam, Panjika, Panchanga, Jantri, etc. Note that different Indian communities and regions follow different calendars
- SOLAR CALENDAR: Malayalam, Oriya Tamil and Bengali calendars are solar calendars based on the movement of the sun.
- LUNISOLAR CALENDAR: Most other Indian communities follow Lunar-Solar (Lunisolar) calendar based on the movement of the sun and moon. Even among followers of the Lunisolar (Lunar-Solar) calendar, there are regional variations such as “Southern Amanta” (aka “Amavasyant”) (AP, Karnataka and Goa), “Western Amanta” (Maharashtra, Gujarat) and Northern “Purnimanta” (Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Utter Pradesh, Uttranchal, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, J&K).
- The Hindu Calendar is called “Panchang” because it has Five (“Panch”) parts/elements (“Ang”). The 5 key parts of a Hindu Panchangam calendar are “Nakshatra”, “Yoga”, “Tithi”, “Vaar”, and “Karana”. The 5 Panchang elements/limbs are the same across all the regional Hindu Panchang calendars.
- As per Hindu astrology, the moons elliptical orbit is divided into 27 units called “Nakshatra”, which represent a day in the lunar month. Of the 27 “Nakshatra”, astrologers consider 11 Nakshatras auspicious for Hindu marriages. These are Rohini (4 only first half), Mrigashirsha (5), Magha (10 – only second half), Uttara Phalguni (12), Hasta (13), Swati (15), Anuradha (17), Mula (19 – only second half), Uttara Ashadha (21), Uttara Bhadrapada (26) and Revati (27).
- Hindu astrologers (“Jyotish”) also factor in “Yoga”, “Varna” (days of the week), “Tithi” (30 in all) and “Karana” (60 in all) before deciding on a good wedding date.
- The full day is not auspicious for performing a wedding. During the day there are special “Shubh Vivah Muhurat” (auspicious wedding time) when it is considered auspicious to conduct a marriage.
- Hindus avoid marriages during “Chaturmas”, the 4 month period when Lord Vishnu and the Gods are thought to be in deep Yogic sleep. North Indians also avoid marriages during “Holashtak”, the eight days leading up to Holi (“Holika Dahan”).
- Hindu astrologers suggest that marriages should not take place during “Pitra Paksh” (“Pitru Paksh”, “Mahalaya Paksh”) from 10 September, 2014 to 23 September, 2014 and during “Bhishm Panchak”.
- Some Hindu astrologers avoid recommending Hindu marriages on Tuesdays since it is ruled by Mars, although in Judaism Tuesday is a very auspicious day for weddings.
- For those who follow the Lunar Calendar, the below three and a half days are considered very auspicious. These astrological good days are called (“Sade Teen Muhurat”) and the entire day is considered auspicious.
- Gudi Padwa (Ugadi): 31 March, 2014 (Monday); 21 March, 2015 (Saturday)
- Akshaya Tritiya: 2 May, 2014 (Friday); 21 April, 2015 (Tuesday)
- Vijaya Dashami (Dassera): 3 October, 2014 (Friday); 22 October, 2015 (Thrusday)
